Haverhill is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts. Located on the Merrimack River, it began as a farming community that would evolve into an important industrial center, beginning with sawmills and gristmills run by water power. In the 18th century, Haverhill developed tanneries, shipping and shipbuilding. The town was for many decades home to a significant shoe-making industry. Haverhill has played a role in nearly every era of American history.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.6 square miles (92.3 km2), of which 33.0 square miles (85.4 km2) is land and 2.7 square miles (6.9 km2), is water. Haverhill is drained by the Little and Merrimack rivers, the latter separating the Bradford section of town from the rest of Haverhill. The city also has several ponds and lakes, as well as three golf courses.
Haverhill is bordered by Merrimac to the northeast, West Newbury and Groveland to the east, Boxford and a small portion of North Andover to the south, Methuen to the southwest, and Salem, Atkinson and Plaistow, New Hampshire, to the north. From its city center, Haverhill is 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Lawrence, 27 miles (43 km) southeast of Manchester, New Hampshire, and 32 miles (51 km) north of Boston. Points of interest include Bradford College and The Buttonwoods Museum (Haverhill Historical Society).

For larger apartment buildings that have a concierge desk, a touchscreen system is available that will connect directly to each tenant’s home, cell and office phones. The system typically contains the names of that tenant’s housekeeper, dog-walker and other service people. The building’s vendors can also be plugged into that system. A tenant can log in and change her information, in case she’s using a different dog walker one week or if she’s hosting a big party, she can enter her guest list, so that the concierge doesn’t have to call up to her apartment each time someone arrives. Such a system, which can serve hundreds of units, can be installed for only a few thousand dollars. An experienced property manager knows that one priority for any building’s security is protection of the HVAC system, which means protection of the roof. A building can be infected in minutes through the HVAC. For this reason, some buildings have installed motion detectors all around that system, with infrared beams that are tripped whenever someone walks through them. An outdoor flame detection system can announce a roof fire immediately. Even a spark from a cigarette lighter will notify the concierge or a central station. A camera surveying the street is now considered by many to be a must, as are cameras on the garbage area, boiler room, laundry room, rooftop, bulkhead door, mailbox area, inside the elevators, lobby, front door and fitness center. Access control, via key cards, should follow the camera line. A conventional key can always be duplicated. With access controls, however, if an unauthorized person is seen on camera using the key card, it can easily be disabled.
